The sophisticated potable water treatment of highly industrialized countries has a very expensive price. In less developed countries such investment is not available. This results in very low quality standards in the centralized supply of population centers.
Rural communities usually do not have any treatment. Water is pumped from wells or drillings into an equalization basin and from there into the pipe system. Thousands of houses relay on private drillings with no quality controls at all. In consideration that this consumers, at least partly, dump their sewage water directly above the subsurface aquifers, the quality of potable water is endangered.
Even clean potable water with its hardness diminishes the lifetime of piping systems and water using machinery like laundries, coffee machines or heating systems.
